Happy New Year
I'm not into new years resolutions but I find that a year will have been "about" something for me. This year was kind of about physical betterment. I think I want next year to be about craft betterment. What about all of you? Any new years resolutions or goals for the coming year?

Confused
This video is so mish-mashed, so random, so weird, so amazing, so unfortunately catchy....I don't even know what to do with myself.
I'm feeling:
LOTR? Narnia? Princess Bride? Bowie? Matrix?

Do yourself a favor
Go here.
It's odd, because if my memory serves me right, I have posted on book art before. But look at the obsession!!!! Look at every page...there are so many pieces.

What do you guys think?...
Hey team Nesbit,
I could really use some more input on the performance piece. I'm kind of in a crucial place with things and I can use all the help I can get.
Thanks for the comments I have received so far,
Jamie

hey, check me out I'm awesome!
I view art making as a response to everyday happenings; 'I Put Her on the Shelf' is a project responding to death, 'Taking my 10' is a video about working at starbucks, and the sculpture entitled 'Eleanor' is a project that touches on friendship.
Recently, I have been selling myself to graduate schools and struggling with the concept of 'coming into myself' or 'being comfortable in my own skin'. The combination of the two has been an interesting and emotional experience that I responded too with the performance entitled, 'Hey, check me out I'm awesome!'
This project consisted of a silkscreened costume of myself, a homemade sign, and a wicked dance playlist. I asked a group of local artists to observe the performance and document it with anything they wanted; they used pen and paper, digital SLR's, crappy little cameras, iphones, ect. Each participant received a cd with the playlist I was listening too so that they could follow along. The cd also acted as the time element in the performance, demarcating when I would start and stop. For the actual performance I danced on a busy street corner for an hour in costume with my sign in the fashion of a street promoter.
'Hey, check me out I'm awesome!' enabled me a tangible reaction to the confusing process of self discovery. The result of which has lead me to be comfortable with the fact that 'I'm an Interesting Person, and People Like Me'--which is going to be the title of my next performance.

nothing to do with art whatsoever.
Jimena is sick. She vomited all night, even when there was nothing in her to vomit, and I held her hair back as she did. Her parents took her to the hospital around 4.30am and I stayed in bed cold, sweaty and worried. We are watching cartoons this morning, I have not showered and well, just wanted to say that to someone, the internet.

LOL
I am currently reading a highly recommended, truly hilarious, and poetically insightful book titled, The Sex Lives of Cannibals-telling the story of a young man who goes to live on a small atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. You would think it would be Paradise, and at moments it is-but it is mostly eating a lot of uncooked fish, listening to "La Macarena," and dealing with people shitting on the beach.
Nevertheless, I just came across this little tidbit that made me laugh out loud and think of Kenobi and her car rides to and from Monterrey with Jamie-
"If you have never driven a manuel-shifting car alone with an uncaged cat, I recommend that you go to great lengths to avoid the experience. I deluded myself into thinking that the cat would sit quietly in the passenger seat, but in fact moments after I started the car he found his way to the top of my head, which he used as a perch to leap toward the window, which sadly for him, was closed, causing him to experience a not inconsiderable amount of panic, which he manifested by ripping me to shreds, pausing only to relieve himself."

Hypochondriac's Guide
Stendhal syndrome is a psychosomatic illness characterized by rapid heartbeat, dizziness, confusion and sometimes hallucinations. The purported cause: Exposure to art, especially when the art is perceived to be unusually beautiful or abundant, such as when visiting a museum.
The condition is named after the French author Stendhal (pseudonym of Henri-Marie Beyle) who described these symptoms after visiting Florence, Italy in 1817.

whew. accountability?
Somewhere in the blitz of packing, I forgot my camera cord so I cannot present any actual images right now. BUT, I wanted to publicly say that I have a studio- well, I have a desk and two walls and I have someone else to clean it for me and I have Spanish windows that overlook Spanish streets. So Nesbit, let us make things. Art. Preferably.

Final draft…still kissing butt
Alvarado Gallerey Proposal
I am a materials based artist working out of the Monterey Bay Area. The concept behind my proposal to exhibit at the Alvarado Gallery is founded on celebration and investigation. My goal is to create a space that is not only available for the viewing of art objects but also to encourage the viewer to expand the means by which they observe abstract forms. This alternative way of looking is inspired by the aesthetics of the Monterey Peninsula. My aim is to equip viewers with openness to innovative concepts of beauty through their observations and interactions with my organic forms, and then take those ideas with them while experiencing the natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula.
I use materials found typically in the home or in industry in an effort to create an atmosphere where viewers feel comfortable looking at uncommon, abstract forms. While these forms remain abstract they have the uncanny ability to resemble the organic forms seen in nature—more specifically off the coast of Monterey Bay. One Wind is a 15 foot by 6 foot sculpture made entirely out of hot glue that can either be hung from the ceiling, transforming the gallery space into a tranquil observatory, or from the wall making the piece itself seem more akin to a specimen.
While my work is inspired by forms found off the coast, each individual piece begins with a story. I am an artist interested in the individual narratives of the lay-person. Something Juana Said is a piece that resembles a creature from the outer bay or the rolling hills of the Salinas Valley, but its concept is rooted in my friendship with a Hispanic migrant worker named Juana; I Put Her on the Shelf is a piece that draws upon the story of the death of a childhood friend.
Like author John Steinbeck, I am interested in the metanarrative created by an amalgamation of private histories. Through the investigations and exploration of these different stories along with the simultaneously familiar and abstract forms I create, I believe that the Alvarado Gallery is the perfect location to create a transformative and celebratory viewing experience.

nesbit extended-madrid.
I've Been Negligent
So many things I want to say right now.
1) Forgive me. I have been a naughty kitten. I have ignored my Nesbit duties. (i.e. not posting work in a very very long time)
2) So many changes, thoughts, events have left me spinning these last several months.
3) Changes at Anthro. Possible promotion in the works, as well as time spent merchandising and creating display. Its pure gratification.
4) Working on another album cover. This time, the band is connected with a label, expectations are higher and I'm feeling excited/fearful/queasy
5) Another season of theater work is upon me. ugh.
6) Am missing you all; your influence, conversation, motivation, humor, presence, critique, ideas, and creativity. missing it greatly. i'm so thankful to have nesbit.
7) you should all see the movie, "The Fall." Its beauty made me physically ache.

Victory!
I just had a victorious moment (involving notaries and all the hoops the Spanish government holds for foreigners) and Puccini's aria "Nessun Dorma" came to mind with all of it's exclamations of "Vincero!" at the end. Immature moment but needed to be shared-here is Pavarotti's last performance of the piece at the last Olympics. How appropriate!

first.
Sydney mentioned to me tonight that she would like if we could begin some discussions on Nesbit. Me first!
"I am not considering Poetry as an Art or a Craft, as the rhythmic verbal expression of a spiritual necessity or urge, but solely as the means to a social end; that being the achievement of a status in society solid enough to warrant the poet discarding and expunging those affectations, so essential in the early stages, of speech, dress, and behaviour; an income large enough to satisfy his physical demands, unless he has already fallen victim to the Poet's Evil, or Great Wen; and a permanent security from the fear of having to write any more." (from How to be a Poet, Dylan Thomas)
Nesbit: 1. What are your thoughts on this passage? I tend, often, towards the "spiritual necessity or urge" when facing art and poetry. Thomas is addressing poetry as business, a means to a wealthy and plump end.
2. Would you rather have your tuba playing neighbor practice loudly every night at 2:30 am OR have your only artistic talent in life involve traditional sheep-dung ceramic firing?

“You slapped my face...Oh but so gently I smiled....At the caress."
"We do not receive wisdom, we must discover it for ourselves, after a journey through the wilderness which no one else can make for us, which no one can spare us, for our wisdom is the point of view from which we come at last to regard the world. The lives that you admire, the attitudes that seem noble to you, have not been shaped by paterfamilias or a schoolmaster, they have sprung from very different beginnings, having been influenced by everything evil or commonplace that prevailed round about them. They represent a struggle and a victory."
