Writing opportunity

Hey ladies. I keep forgetting that I know of a cool opportunity to submit writing and reviews about art, museums, artists, shows, anything art-related really, to an online publication called the Burnside Writers Collective. The BWC is associated with Donald Miller (Blue Like Jazz) and I found out about it because my brother-in-law, John, is doing some work for them up in Portland these days. He had asked me if I wanted to write about anything art-related (or if I knew anyone else who might want to) because they are trying beef-up the art section of the publication.

Sooo, all that said, if you go to any art shows (anywhere....Elly...) and like to write (...Lauren...), spit out a few paragraphs and send them in! (Or send the article to me and I can pass it on to John, who has a more direct relationship to the BWC) Oh to be published...

Questions? Email me...

May 2007 Art in America

"Art school should be a place to fuck up without fear of consequences, and to learn from the messes made." --Thomas Lawson

"The notorious Q-word (quality) has been banned from art discourse for decades, but it hovers backstage during every critique." --Laurie Fendrich

in the May issue of Art in America there is an article on art schools...very interesting....check it out.

Draw me crazy

I discovered this artist today and am totally intrigued by his work. There are a lot of process photos and I would like to see more of the drawings themselves, but either way you should check him out. I particularly like the Postal works and tree drawings.

an inquiring mind would like to know

I have been thinking a lot about profanity in art. Something that is profane is that which is secular, irreverent, or as some would consider it, offensive. When artists use profanity in art, perhaps it is to examine the power that association brings to a word...the collective opinion of a majority who label a word as secular and use it only to express extreme emotion or frustration etc etc. Artists may use profanity in juxtaposition to the sacred, or even further still for humor or irony. But when does this become ploy, or gimmick?? I am objectively asking these questions, because I am wondering if there are times when using profanity can become a crutch for the artist, or is used to offend or to be confrontational. Profanity is inherently aggressive/confrontational and so it seems to me that using this to be confrontational in a piece may be a cheap trick (if this is indeed the aim of the artist). Now there have been times when I have been surprised (and yes, delighted) at seeing a well-played expletive in a piece (like the gratification of finding money in your jeans pocket). When expletives are the subject or dominating factor in a piece of art, I have often wondered when or if, this idea is too played-out. Maybe this is something to be explored further??
Furthermore, I think it would be negligence to fail to consider how this idea affects a Christian artist.

I am throwing this out onto nesbit, because I think it is a curious position to consider and would love to hear what everyone else has to say.

las mariposas.

"It was then that she realized that the yellow butterflies preceded the appearances of Mauricio Babilonia. She had seen them before, especially over the garage, and she had thought that they were drawn by the smell of paint. Once she had seen them fluttering about her head before she went into the movies. But when Mauricio Babilonia began to pursue her like a ghost that only she could identify in the crowd, she understood that the butterflies had something to do with him.....One night, while Meme was in the bathroom, Fernanda went into her bedroom by chance and there were so many butterflies that she could scarcely breathe."

I am nearing the end of Marquez's novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude" (Cien anos de soledad) and am getting lost in so many visual narrations. If you are looking for a good read, he is a fantastic choice! He also has a number of shorter novelas and stories.

Expletives

I came across this shot of pieces by Mindy Cherri, from a show somewhere in a so-cal gallery. I post it because Kayo's explicit work is on my mind these days and this is in the same vein...

The Good Shepherd

This is so fun and clever. My brother-in-law sent me this link the other day and I just think it's fantastic. Check it out:

Looking closely I can see that each animal is actually connected to a phone line and I'm wondering if maybe you could dial from each head...hmm. Also, there is just one sheep that has a head with touchtone buttons, where the rest have rotary faces...

berlioz!

This is a beautiful painting. A coffee to whoever names the author first! Yesterday, I was asked to name off the artists by whom I am most influenced and I froze... How best does one compile such a list? I began brainstorming tonight, spending a few hours online and wanted some moral support from home.

I'm watching Libby and Sydney sleep...

More on the CyberCrit...

Libby had a thought..."What do you think about each person having a designated day instead of everyone on one day?"

Brilliant! Why Don't those interested in participating leave a comment and I'll assign dates to each person. Then we'll have the guest 'critter' come in after. Awesome, thanks Libby.

CyberFun!...wait...

Hello Tots!

Jamie here with yes...an IDEA!!! Perhaps the idea of the century! Huzzah! I would like to purpose a CYBERCRIT!

Crit day will be in three weeks from today (June 26, 2007) on that day whoever would like to participate (EVERYONE) will post images of ONE finished piece along with any little tidbit write up you want to give it...then...(as you may have guessed) we all leave comments about your post.

But wait there is more...I will also be providing a guest 'critter' (haha) to log on to our page and leave comments about our work. I was thinking that each month (or so) one of us acts as the 'host' of the CyberCrit, in which our responsibilities would consist of announcing a crit date, organizing a guest critique person, and umm other stuff. So this month is me...booya!

Yay...questions? comments?

P.S. Happy Birthday yesterday to Ms. Libby Stokes and I promise I'll avoid using you for inebriated back-rubs next year.

Beauties and the Troll

For all you lovelies coming to Seattle, this is the famous Freemont Troll. He has spent years squatting under that bridge, allowing children to climb and clamber upon his mighty frame. Perhaps we will pay him a visit and indulge in some tomfoolery.

My computer tells me that the way to create a web link is "cntl. + shift + a"....and it lies. (but then Libby came in and made your link work, sooo.... yeah, she didn't do it to make you look a liar...)

Anyway, The Whitney Museum of American Art's homepage is currently titled "Summer of Love" as they are doing an exhibition on "Art of the Psychedelic Era" and it looks fantastic! I just might 'fro my hair before going...

Also, they are exhibiting a fellow named Matthew Brannon and he has a sweet website especially as far as design goes.

Also #2. I was thinking about Sydney a lot last night...for no particulary reason other than I LIKE YOU....and I started a painting. It's really bad. Pictures to follow.

Peace.

C.S. Lewis is infiltrating my mind....

“A man whose hands are full of parcels can’t receive a gift. Perhaps these parcels are not always sins or earthly cares, but sometimes our own fussy attempts to worship Him in our way.”

“Can you do any sort of handwork? I’ve found that making crocheted rugs and tablecloths, or knitting socks, was an amazing help with my spiritual difficulties when I was feeling low. One can work off so many frustrations by stabbing away with a knitting needle! It’s better to make pretty things, I find, than just useful ones.”
[Joy Lewis]

“I am a barbarously early riser...I love the empty, silent, dewy, cobwebby hours.”

“It will not bother me in the hour of death to reflect that I have been “had for a sucker” by any number of impostors; but it would be a torment to know that one had refused even one person in need. After all, the parable of the sheep and the goats makes our duty perfectly plain, doesn’t it. Another thing that annoys me is when people say ‘Why did you give that man money? He’ll probably go and drink it.’ My reply is ‘But if I’d kept [it] I should probably have drunk it.’”

“Don’t you think Our Lord says to you ‘Peace, child, peace. Relax. Let go. Underneath are the everlasting arms. Let go, I will catch you. Do you trust me so little?”

I finished reading Lewis' "Letters to an American Lady" while home this weekend...these were some of my favorite quotes. Going home is always good. I enjoy going to church and being within that body. And I love spending time with my mom. But I have to say that today coming back to class and just now flopping down onto Jamie's couch was so perfect. I had had sort of a poopie morning...the ortho appointment did not go well and there are more complications, which means I will most likely have to have the braces on for another year or so....which is depressing but I do know there is a reason for it (beyond straight teeth) and it is a good reminder that a lot of people in the world have it much worse off than I. And in the midst of all that it is so wonderful to just make art and be around good people....you know...?

also, you all need to look at this artist: www.clarinabezzola.com

Die die die

Elaine Bradford makes me want to die. I mean, just look at this. Gaaaah.

Check out her website and enjoy her work (in spite of the jealousy which you will feel).

flopping barney.

Barney is the name of the cat who is currently asleep against my left leg, confining me to my bedroom floor until he so decides. Now, let it be known that I, Eleanor Greer Clemmons, am NOT a cat person by any definition of the term. But Barney...silly silly Barney is making me into an ok-with-cats-person.

On a side note, Barney's owner, A single woman, age 50, and an incredibly talented conductor. Now rid from your head any thoughts of a so called "cat-lady", that being the single, older woman who owns 12 cats for it is only for my want of writing skills that any such image will come to your mind. I have been observing her these past days for I have been curious as to what it would look like to be as wonderful as she, and yet unmarried. She has Barney. Dear flopping Barney, to her, is a friend, a roommate, a listening ear, a child and a pet. Her other cat Lucy died on Mother's Day and Barney has been spending a lot of time recently under the bed where Lucy died. Thus Barney has been dotted upon, talked to and treated...she has a special voice that is used only for Barney.

I was told this morning that often New Yorkers grow complacent and lacking suprise at the gifts of everyday life for they live in New York...the city where you can find everything, all the time. So here's to being from California and learning how to keep ones eyes open.

ps: I think that Elly is a GREAT name...and that Barney, although a member of the Flintstones crew, is a dinosaur.

Eleanor Uretsky?

Welcome Eleanor! And Lisa for that matter. I just wanted to announce that I will be naming my first born daughter Eleanor (insert whatever last name you want here)…

Yes, I am naming her after our very own Elly…and yes it is because I like Elly more then all of you. Do not fret the middle name is still up for grabs.

Oh, also…I actually went to church today…and liked it. I also like Lauren but not enough to name my child after her.

Draw with me, a picture

As artists you should all appreciate this. There is a designer who is doing a research-type project looking into the post-mortem. One of the resulting pieces is a set of about 240 pencils that were created using the human ash remains of someone who had been cremated. Now we can live on through art in a more meaningful, yet creepy way! Huzzah.

Not much

Um, I really don't have anything new. I'm just sitting, thinking about how much I really like you all. And how much I love that this blog happened. And how I'm having fun tweaking the settings. And how I don't want to leave yet. What should we do for the fourth of July?
